Dima Bilan – Last Christmas

You will probably have to look twice to notice that is indeed the Russian Eurovision winner from 2009, Dima Bilan. He performed with this version of Wham’s Last Christmas on the TV show ‘Точь в точь’, where the purpose is to dress up like another performer – and no one can be in doubt that this is a George Michael imitation.

Grethe Inmann – Jeg Så Julemanden Kysse Mor

In Denmark many artists have recorded Christmas songs, both original, but also translations of foreign ones. This one is by the country’s first Eurovision winner Grethe Ingmann. It translates to ‘I Saw Santa Kissing Mum’, and yes, it is a Danish version of the internationally well known I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa originally recorded in 1952 by 13 year old Jimmy Boyd, but later made very famous by Jackson5.

Tina Karol – Тиха Ніч

Moving over to Ukraine, we find Tina Karol’s version of the well known song in English known as ‘Silent Night’. Tína represented her country at the 2006 Eurovision Song Contest. That time, she sang in English, this time, she keeps it in Ukrainian. The lyrics in this version are quite close to the original, so when listening, you can just enjoy without wondering what she sings about.

Katy Garbi -O Χειμώνας o βαρύς

We continue with another cover version of a well known Christmas song. Here is a Greek version of Winter Wonderland. This one is sung by Katy Garbi who represented Greece at the 1993 Eurovision Song Contest. Katy gets help by a children choir on this one, which in its lyrics are close to the original.

Celine Dion – Oh Holy Night

Canadian Celine Dion won the Eurovision Song Contest in 1988 – before she became the superstar she is today. Oh Holy Night is originally from 1847, and French, but in recent years, the most famous version has become one by Mariah Carey. The song tells about the birth of Jesus.

Litesound – Shooting Star

From Belarus, Litesound gave us this Christmas song, which has a bit more guitar on than most songs we heat at this season, although the video starts with one being kicked out of the house! The band represented their country at the 2012 Eurovision Song Contest.

Alexander Rybak and Didrik Solli-Tangen – Presents

Two Eurovision artists in one. That’s what you get on this Christmas song. The song has been added quite some humour and tells how the two men keeps spotting the same girls. They are ready to give away the presents under the Christmas tree, if the other one would back off. At the end, they agree that girls come and go, but their friendship will remain, and as such the presents are for both of them.

Il Volo – Christmas Medley

In Italy, we find the handsome trio Il Volo who took part in the 2015 edition of the Eurovision Song Contest. This trio received big international recognition afterwards, and of course Christmas is also on their repertoire. In this medley you find the internationally well known songs Jingle Bell Rock, Let It Snow and It’s The Most Wonderful Time Of Year.

Zoë – La Nuit Des Merveilles

‘The night of miracles’, that’s what Zoë’s Christmas song here translates to. She represented Austria at the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest with a song in French, just as this one. In this song Zoë asks Pere Noël if he received her letter. In between mentioning the snowy weather, the lights and Christmas night itself, she adds that all she wants, is love for everyone.

Dami Im – All I Want For Christmas Is You

We end with a Christmas song, which you have probably heard a lot, although maybe not in this version. Here is Dami Im, who represented Australia at the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest where she finished second. Enjoy.

We at Eurovisionary.com would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas for you and your loved ones.

This show was at a much higher standard compared to previous years. Eugent breaks tradition from previous years, as the last 2 years have been solo females, so this song could do extremely well for Albania in Lisbon.

The Results

So Eugent placed 1st, then Redon Makashi placed 2nd and Iris Neziri placed 3rd. No jury scores are available at the moment, but those are the op 3 placings from the show tonight. You can find more information about the show in the live blog we published during the evening.

Rock singer Eugent Bushpepa to represent Albania in Lisbon

Rock singer Eugent Bushpepa to represent Albania in Lisbon

Eugent Bushpepa

The professional jury in charge of selecting Albania’s 2018 representative has deliberated and decided that Eugent Bushpepa will be flying to Lisbon in May to represent the country in the competition.

Eugent is a present figure in the Albanian music scene and better known for his rock attempts.

During the last few days, Albania held the Festivali i Këngës 56 in order to select their 2018 representative for the Eurovision Song Contest. It all came to an end tonight. After three televised shows, the professional jury has decided that Eugent Bushpepa will be the country’s best choice for next year’s musical competition. He won with the song Mall.

It still is uncertain if Mall will be rearranged before being presented in Lisbon next year, or indeed whether another song will be chosen.

The final show, hosted by Adi Krasta in Tirana’s Palace of Congres, lasted for more than three hours as all of the 14 songs that made it into the final were performed one last time. Bushpepa was one of the last ones performing and just like a few others, the singer experienced a few sound issues but that certainly didn’t hurt his performance.

The search for the 2018 representative started out with 70 entries submitted for the event. RTSH – Albania’s official broadcaster – gathered the 22 best ones and divided those into two semi finals. This will be the first time Albania will be represented by a man since 2013 when Adrian Lulgjuraj & Bledar Sejko represented the country with Identitet.

Two years without qualifying for the finals

It was indeed time for Albania to test another formula as the country has been struggling to achieve decent results in the past years. Not only has Albania failed to qualify in the last two years but the last time the country ranked among the top 10 was back in 2012 when Rona Nishliu represented the country.

While opting out for powerful divas, Albania didn’t miss out the chance to send a powerful vocalist as Eugent’s vocal range is quite limitless. Below you can watch Eugent’s final perfomance of Mall.

Nine different nationalities present in San Marino’s national final

Nine different nationalities present in San Marino’s national final

San Marino has revealed the full list of participants for its national final. Eleven artists will take part, who together possess no less than nine different nationalities. Only one of the participants comes from San Marino.

Broadcaster SMRTV had previously revealed three wildcard participants. Among the eight acts now added to the list are several previous preselection participants, including Franklin Calleja and Jessika Muscat from Malta, and Judah Gavra from Israel.

San Marino ‘s national Eurovision selection participants:

  • Emma Sandström (Finland)
  • Giovanni Montalbano (Italy)
  • Irol (San Marino)
  • Camilla North (Norway)
  • Franklin Calleja (Malta)
  • Jenifer Besky (Germany)
  • Jessika Muscat (Malta)
  • Judah Gavra (Israel)
  • Sebastian Schmidt (Germany)
  • Sara de Blue (Austria)
  • Tinashe Makura (Zimbabwe)

In recent years, San Marino went for an internal selection to pick their act for Eurovision. Now they came up with a new strategy. For San Marino it is a struggle to take part at the Eurovision Song Contest each year. It makes sense, that the delegation from the microstate is looking a bit envious at the bigger countries with big productions, like Russia.

Capicchioni: “Very difficult for small countries to do Eurovision”

Towards ESCDaily, Alessandro Capicchioni, the Head of Delegation from San Marino explains the financial difficulties for a small nation to take part: “It is very difficult. When you consider that we have only a hundred employees, and how many people are working on Eurovision alone from SVT… The budget of Eurovision is also bigger than our whole tv budget. So you can understand that the numbers don’t fit the word ‘easy’”

The only way that San Marino can take part is if someone like Ralph Siegel or Serhat steps in, the delegation explained in 2016. But now they found another way to be able to take part and still cover most of the expenses. “We always look for sponsors and participate in the most economical way,” says Capicchioni. “Russia has a great production, but we can not afford that. The EBU can not help any more than giving all countries the same chances. Of course, it is a balance of power, the big countries have more to say at the table. But the EBU is able to keep all countries of Europe under one roof. A political struggle, but also something very huge in terms or organisation, also for small countries like San Marino.”
